Parent Council – First Meeting September 26
The Jackman Parent Council holds their first meeting on Monday, September 26 at 7:00 pm in the Library. Elections for the various positions on the Council will be held. “As a school council member, you can help your council discover new and exciting ways to contribute to the education of students in your school. Education is a partnership involving parents, students, teachers, principals, school boards, government, and the community. Your involvement in the council gives you the opportunity to strengthen that partnership, and to be part of a dedicated team working to ensure a high quality of education and an accountable education system for the children of Ontario. Your participation
can make a difference!” (School Councils, A Guide for Members, revised 2002, Ontario Ministry of Edcuation).
Jackman School Council Mission Statement The Jackman School Council exists to provide a forum through which parents and other members of the school community can contribute to improving student achievement and the student experience. The Jackman community strongly values academic achievement, holistic programming, environmental awareness, equity, diversity and community involvement.

Meet the Teacher Night
We look forward to seeing all of our parents on Thursday, September 22 for our Meet the Teacher Night. Parents are invited to meet their child’s teacher, visit their child’s class, and her about the classroom program. Our evening starts at 6:30, with two twenty-minute sessions to facilitate families with more than one child at the school. Sessions A will run from 6:30 – 6:50, and Session B will run from 6:55 – 7:15. We look forward to seeing everyone!
Cross Country Sign-Up and Area Meet
A Jackman school tradition continues with the announcement of the tentative date for our Cross Country Area Qualifier Meet at Ashbridges Bay on Friday, September 30th. Jackman has a long history of sending a great team of runners to this board-wide event. Mr. Plytas and Mr. Katsuras are organizing practices, and students from Grade 1-6 are invited to participate. This is an ideal opportunity for students who like to run and want to experience it at a competitive level. Students have already been called to our gym during recess time to express interest and hear about the commitment they are making towards making the cross country team. If your child wishes to participate, we have a final information session for Grades 1-3 and Grades 3-6 on Wednesday, September 14 at morning recess in the GPR/gym.
Terry Fox Run September 29, 2016
We have marked our calendars for our annual participation in the Terry Fox Run for Thursday, September 29. This national event helps support cancer research, and all funds donated are sent to the Terry Fox Foundation. We will be sending home more information in the near future, and invite parents to participate as well.
The T.D.S.B. requires all schools to go to a voice automated phone system to alert parents of a student absence or late. Here is the information you’ll need to know.
- All parents should phone in a student absence as soon as you know. The phone line is open 24 hours a day. The number is 416-393-9715.
- If you forget to phone in an absence, the automated phone call will go out around 10:00am. It is important that you follow all prompts to complete the call otherwise you will receive another message from the system
- If the system does not reach you, a second phone call will go out to your second phone contact. The above cycle is then repeated if no contact is made. Shortly thereafter, the school receives a report indicating no contact has been made with parents. Sandra or Carol from our office will then manually try and contact you
- The above procedure will also be done for all student absences in the afternoon. The first call going out at 1:30 and the second one at 2:30
- If your child arrives late to school, the automated phone system will alert you from 6-7pm that evening.
To avoid annoyance from the automated system, we encourage all families to be proactive in calling the school early if your child will be away from school.
Smile! Picture Day has been set for Tuesday, September 27. A retake day will be set should a student be absent or a retake is requested. More information about Retake Day will be sent out next week.
Our first pizza lunch is scheduled for Wednesday, September 28. This fundraising event, organized by our Parent Council, runs once a month throughout the school year. While you are signing up, please consider volunteering to hand out the Pizza Lunch in your child’s classroom. There are several volunteer prompts on our web site, it is quick and easy to sign up to volunteer. We need 2 parents per classroom for each of the Pizza Lunches – a fun and rewarding 30 minutes in your busy week where you’ll be able to be a ‘fly on the wall’ and see the inner workings of their classroom. Please sign up today.
Addressing Questions, Issues, or Concerns
Our school is a dynamic place for teaching and learning, and our goal is to provide the best possible service to our students and families. If you have a question, an issue or concern, we are here to listen and to help. The best place to start this address is with staff at the school level. If you are looking for classroom-related information, your child’s teacher is here to help (e.g. homework, assignments, assessment and evaluation, classroom programs, etc). If you have questions about school operations, finances, schedules, communications, registrations, etc., Mr. Sullivan is here to help. He can also help with questions, issues, or concerns that may extend beyond the scope of the classroom. Superintendents of Education are available to assist in such matters as school suspension appeals, or to help with matters beyond the scope of the school. And finally, School Trustees, elected community officials, are here to help address concerns within the community, ideas and suggestions for the board, board budgets, policies under review, and collective bargaining.
To reach us, please call the school at 416-393-9710, email, or arrange to meet in person. We take pride in helping to address your questions or concerns in as timely a manner as possible.
A chart for addressing a concern or issue is available at http://www.tdsb.on.ca/ContactUs/StepstoAddressQuestionsConcerns.aspx
