Weekly Update

Early French Immersion Online Application Due December 1

If you have a child in Junior Kindergarten (JK), and are interested in registering for the TDSB’s Early French Immersion program, starting in Senior Kindergarten (SK) in September 2017, then you must meet the December 1, 2016 online application deadline. The application is available at www.tdsb.on.ca/PARS and it requires that you enter your child’s Ontario Education Number (OEN). This number was sent home in early November to all of our JK families, and is available by telephone from the office. All applications received after December 1 will be marked as Late Applicant and wait-listed for the program. Please be reminded that placement in the program is guaranteed, not place (school location) of program.

Cookie Dough Sales Continue

A holiday reminder that our Parent Council Cookie Dough Sale continues, with orders due by December 2. This is a great way to start your holiday baking season off to the wonderful aroma of cookies fresh from the oven. Funds raised go to help Parent Council initiatives around the school. To place your order, pick up an order form from the office, or order online at http://munchalunch.com/schools/JackmanAvenue/

Cookie Dough orders will be delivered on December 15 at 3:30 pm in the GPR.

PA Day on December 2

A reminder that Friday, December 2 is a PA Day, and there is no school for students. Staff at Jackman will spend the day engaged in professional learning activities.

Parent Council Meeting

Our next Parent Council Meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 5 at 7:00 pm in the Library. We invite our parents to take the opportunity to attend our council meetings to discuss ways to support teaching and learning at Jackman.

Jackman’s Grade 6 Leadership Opportunities

We have started a new range of opportunities for our Grade 6 students to participate as leaders at Jackman. Our Grade 6 students are actively participating as Student Announcers, Student Ambassadors, and have signed up to sit on our Student Council. The Student Council members have already begun planning special Spirit and Equity initiatives at the school – Red Nose Campaign and Food Drive/Giving Tree. The Red Nose Campaign raises funds for the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, and the food drive and giving tree (hat, mitts, gloves, scarfs) will provide much needed items for families in need over the holidays. More information from the Student Council will be provided in the upcoming days.

Next Pizza Lunch – December 14

Our next Pizza Lunch is December 14! It’s the last one in 2016! Our next Pizza Lunch will be January 20, 2017.

Winter Concert on December 21

Classes are hard at work preparing their songs, dances and art work for Winter Concert. Our first concert of the school year is scheduled for Wednesday, December 21 at 6:30 pm (note time change). We remind families that due to space restrictions in our GPR, we ask that you limit seats to two per family. Childminding will be provided. We also ask that families consider bringing in a non-perishable food donation to help with our Food Drive.

Flu Season Is Upon Us

At this time of year we spend more times indoors and the weather is cooler, bringing with it increased chances to “catch the flu”. We encourage our students to wash their hands regularly, both at home and at school, and ask families to keep students at home should they be sick to help reduce the spread of any influenza virus. Toronto Public Health provides information regarding flu vaccinations on their website at; http://www1.toronto.ca/wps/portal/contentonly?vgnextoid=a253ba2ae8b1e310VgnVCM10000071d60f89RCRD

Picking Up Your Child From School and Other Reminders

A reminder to all of our families to please send a note to your child’s teacher if you are picking him/her up early from school. We have been responding to many phone calls from families, which requires that we call the classroom and interrupt the learning of all the students to have a student sent down to the office for early pick up. We also ask that all parents sign in at the main office if they are visiting the school during regular school-day hours, and to please return the Visitor’s badge to the Main Office. If you have a Visitor’s badge(s) at home, please send them in to the school with your child.

Riverdale Share Concert

The 24th Annual Riverdale Share Concert is scheduled for Sunday, December 4 at 3:00 pm at the Danforth Music Hall. This community fundraiser helps raise funds and food for community members in crisis. Tickets are available at Treasure Island Toys and The Big Carrot.

Trustee Jennifer Story invites you to an important discussion

Ward Council Meeting Tomorrow

(Tuesday Nov 29)

I hope you can join us tomorrow night for our Ward Forum focused on Safer Streets Near Schools.

A very large number of our school communities are grappling with issues of traffic and safety for our school kids. I hope your school council can send a representative for this very important discussion.

Kevin Chan will be joining us as our guest. He is one of the authors of the recent report Safer Streets Near Schools.

Since most of the remedies related to street safety are municipal in nature, Councillor Paula Fletcher will also be in attendance, as will a staff representative on behalf of Councillor Fragedakis.

We will also have updates from the board, and from our French as a Second Language Advisory Committee. The meeitng is being held tomorrow (Tuesday Nov. 29) at William Burgess school, 100 Torrens Avenue, East York (near Pape and O’Connor) at 7pm.

Yours in community,
